How to get organized for Christmas and Wrap Presents

‘Tis the season! If the daily countdown until Christmas is making you anxious because there is so much to do, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday less haggard.  Plus, we will show you a few ways to dress up your holiday packaging to really make gift giving feel extra special.

Tip #1:

Get organized! We recommend creating a spreadsheet with all the people that you need to buy gifts for.  In the first column, add their name.  In the second column, add what you bought or gift ideas that you may have. In the third column, include the price (including shipping).  This will really help you next year determine your holiday budget and keep track of all your holiday expenses this year.  Include everyone that is on your list including teachers, household contributors (such as a cleaning lady or landscaper), neighbors, Secret Santa, holiday party host, and of course, your friends and family.  In the fourth and final column, mark whether the item has been received and keep this up to date.  Especially in the world of online ordering, you want to make sure that what you have ordered and been charged for actually makes it to your home! (We are still missing several Black Friday packages...)

To make things even easier, we created a free simple holiday gift tracker for you to print and use below!

Tip #2:

Order your wrapping supplies early.  Wrapping supplies not only include your wrapping paper but gift boxes, gift bags, tissue paper, tape, scissors, gift tags, shipping labels, and gift stickers.  For bulk wrapping paper, bows, boxes, and tissue, we love Nashville Wraps.  They ship lightning fast and are very affordable.

We love four items from More Than Paper to add to your gift wrapping supplies.

-       A personalized hanging gift tag.  We affix this to packages and then write on the back, or up top, to whom the gift is for.

-       A personalized gift sticker with a holiday message from our family.

-       A personalized gift sticker with a blank recipient name and “with love, Santa” personalized sentiment. This makes gift giving for the kids quick, easy, and stylish!

-       Holiday shipping labels for shipping packages.  These holiday shipping labels give an extra special touch to your mailings!  We personalize the front address for quick and shipping labels.

Store these items together in one easily accessible place.  We suggest wrapping presents as they come in or as you buy them.  Don’t wait to wrap all the gifts at once or you will have wrapping fatigue! We set up a station of sorts in our kitchen with all the supplies handy that we can put out and then put away. Turn on some holiday music or a holiday movie and get in the spirit!

Tip #3:

To make your holiday card sending a breeze, the first step is to get your recipients addresses in order. Address management for your contacts can be a full-time job if done only once a year, so do your best to keep up with it all year round.  We recently found a great contact management solution called Postable.  You can get a customized address link and send it via text message to friends & family, requesting them to input the data like name, address, birthday, anniversary, email & even details about their children.  This gives them the job of data entry and all the information gets put into your database. This has been invaluable, and we highly recommend a tool like this!

When it comes time to sending your cards, you can import the data from your Postable account into an Avery label template to make holiday address labels. Be sure to order your cards from More Than Paper! We have a selection of quick turn cards shown below.

Tip #4:

Carefully plan your holiday menu in advance. First, gather your guests input (for this, we really mean the picky children eaters at our table…), think about allergies of your guests, and peruse magazines and Pinterest.  Build out your menu including your appetizers, entrĂ©e, dessert, cocktails, and mocktails on paper.  From there, you can carefully and meticulously make one list.  (Pro Tip: outsource the appetizer and dessert to capable guests.  We like using a cute holiday notepad for our list making… but that’s just us!  Perhaps you even want to print your menu on festive paper like this one.

The Art of Crane

The holiday season is around the corner and those that get ahead will get to enjoy the festive time without the stress.  Are you starting your holiday card search? Ordering your holiday cards early will certainly put you ahead!  Our luxe holiday cards by Crane are currently on sale. Now is a great time to order!

Stationery and holiday cards by Crane are a go-to for stationery lovers. What makes Crane so special? We’ve dug a little deeper. Here’s why:

The history is rich.

The history of Crane is over 250 years in the making! That’s right. 250!  In 1770, entrepreneur Stephen Crane founded the business and purchased the Liberty Paper Mill. Paul Revere was one of its earliest customers and Crane printed the American Colonies' first paper money. It’s evolved over time but has remained deeply rooted in tradition. The Queen famously used Crane Stationery!

The secret is in the printing. Not necessarily the paper.

People often mistake Crane being known for incredible paper, but we feel the true magic is in the printing process. (Don’t get us wrong, their high quality paper made from cotton feels luxe in your hands, but other manufacturers do tend to have heavier papers. It’s not just about the paper in our eyes - it's more about the meticulous craftsmanship which really stands out in the printing!)

Crane’s multiple printing processes allow for cards to really stand out from the crowd. Some of their cards when examined closely are truly exquisite. Many of Crane’s cards are a composite of multiple printing techniques, and some of the most artful printing methods that exist.  Your Crane card may have engraving, thermography, letterpress, embossing, foil stamping, or digital printed. It may be a combination of several of these techniques!

Here's a closer look at the possible techniques:

  • Engraving:  Truly an art-form, an engraved design is highly detailed and executed by a professional. This professional engraver carefully etches the design and/or text into a copper plate, known as a die. Ink is applied to the die and then the paper is delicately and precisely pressed between the die and a handcrafted counter to yield a beautifully detailed and raised imprint. The raised ink design is often intricate and you can typically see delicate indentation of the text and graphics on the reverse side of the cardstock. Engraving is especially beautiful with metallic inks like silver and gold.
  • Thermography: Less expensive and faster than engraving, thermography somewhat mimics the look of engraving, although the ink is typically has a slight sheen. Thermography uses a polymer plate to transfer ink to the top of a paper. Then a resinous powder is added to the wet ink. Lastly, heat is applied activating the powder which results in a beautiful raised ink.
  • Letterpress: Developed in the 15th century, this process is labor and time intensive. Prints are made one at a time with each print having its own variation. Details and type are set in reverse on a plate - so really the opposite of engraving.  Plates are inked and pressed into paper, usually through a printing press. Your text and designs will look indented into the paper - which is traditionally a cotton letterpress stock. Crane's Lettra paper is not only used by Crane but by many, many other printers in the industry. The soft fibers make it a perfect medium to absorb the inks during letterpress printing.
  • Blind Embossing: The process is like engraving because a raised image is produced using a copper plate, but no ink is used leaving a more understated and classy impression.
  • Digital Printing: Practical and cost effective, digital printing is a form of flat printing. There are no raised letters or plates. Ink is “sprayed” onto the paper rather than imprinting it. If you are having Crane print your family photo onto your holiday photo card, that photo will be digitally printed. While many printers offer digital printing these days, the combination of Crane's state-of-the-art printers and beautiful smooth, bright papers makes for a dazzling result.

Want to see an example? Take this Crane holiday greeting card, "Merry Ornaments." This card uses engraving and embossing on the cover and thermography printing on the inside. Look up close at the beautiful details!

Halloween came and went and that can only mean one thing…. Tips for your Holiday Card Photo

Judging from the volume of holiday card orders that we have already received by mid-October, it’s our estimate that people are thinking about their holiday correspondence earlier than ever before.  Be it all the extra time at home or that people are just anxious to put the year behind them, there is no sign that the trend of mailing friends and family a card during December is slowing down. We wrote a helpful post in 2013 about tips for taking the perfect holiday card photo. Some good ones but certainly much has changed in seven years. We’re back today with a much updated 2020 version on how to take the best holiday card photo.

Tip 1:  Try a filter (within reason)

With the rise of Instagram and photo apps, plus the immense progress that camera phones have made, it’s pretty easy now to take a really good photo.  Professional photographers still have a place of course, but if you’re on a budget, it’s easy to find resources at home.  We recommend though, that you don’t go too wild with photo filters.  Ultimately, you want it to look natural and not overprocessed.  Try these top photo filter apps if you are a newbie here.  We love the ability to pump up colors, fix blemishes, add natural light, and more!

  • -       Instagram
  • -        Tezza
  • -        Snapseed
  • -        Vsco
  • -        A Color Story
  • -        Afterlight
  • -        Adobe Lightroom

-        Also, consider buying presets for your Adobe Lightroom Mobile App. We love Light & Air Photographers beautiful aesthetic. Their collection of presets is available to install into to the app and make it so easy to find your look.  PRO TIP: Make sure that the application and filter that you use doesn't distort the resolution of your photo.  You will still need a high res photo to use with your photo cards.

Tip 2: Get by with a little help from your friends

Sure, there are lots of selfie sticks and camera tripods available these days (even phone timers!), but see if you can get a good friend or neighbor to help take some photos of you and your family.  Best to get someone with a good personality and even someone who can make you laugh.  Try to avoid directly staring at the camera and posing with cheesy, canned smiles.  How do you do that?  Be natural. Have your “photographer” friend talk to you, ask questions, tell funny stories, interact with each other, all while the photographer is snapping away.  We find that some of the best photos are ones that capture a moment.  Ideas to try:

-        Have everyone play a game of telephone – whisper something in each person’s ear and the last person has to say it.  This can get silly with little ones.  It usually produces a natural laugh when it comes out!

-        We know a professional photographer that tells fart jokes nearly the entire session.  Okay, it’s not the classiest moment, but you know what gets little boys to laugh?  Fart jokes.  We’re going to bet Dad smiles, too.

-        Jump and move around.  Sometimes the action shots turn out the best.

-        HAVE FUN.

Tip 3:  Take a lot of photos.

Does this go without saying?  Probably.  You’ll need to get dozens to find one that is “perfect.”  From people closing their eyes to you being picky about your hair… there are never enough options from which to choose.  We also suggest mixing up your location.   Take several by the trees, some on the front step, some by the back of the house against a pretty wood or brick background (we do recommend them all being outside!)   Get options, options, options.   We don’t think you can have enough.

Tip 4:  Don’t sweat it too much.

Ultimately, you are sending these cards to your family and friends who love you and want to see YOU. Does it matter if everyone is matching and your lipstick is perfect to those people?  Ask yourself for what reason are you really sending the cards.  This isn’t a marketing campaign but an expression of connecting and staying in touch.  Show the real you. All too often people lose that perspective.   Keep it real. And given the 2020 we have all had, really anything goes – your family and friends will just be happy to see you!

More Than Paper is so pleased to help continue the tradition of sending holiday cards this time of year. We’re proud to have clients return year after year and see their children grow.  We’ve recently added a lot of letterpress photo mount cards.  Some of our new favorites are show below.  Do you like any of these?

Holiday Cards Explained

A Very Holiday August

It may only be August here at More Than Paper, we can already hear Carol of the Bells playing sweetly in the  background, feel a warm fire by the Christmas tree, and imagine wrapping presents for our loved ones.  Keeping traditions alive, we’re also thinking about sending our holiday greeting cards.  We’re offering a big sale on select holiday cards that you might want to check out. It’s true that the early bird does get the worm, after all. If you are willing to order early, you can save quite a bit of money on adorable cards. And, you’ll get a jump on the holidays. One less thing to do come November and December.

Which holiday card is right for you?

There are several types of holiday cards available at More Than Paper and we’re here today to explain the differences between them.  Each type has its advantages and you’ll want to understand the nuances so you can get exactly what works best for you.

Digital Holiday Photo Greeting Cards.  When you select a holiday card with this option, we will digitally print your photo on to the card – no need to get prints and adhere your photos to the cardstock. Your photo will be cropped to fit the space dedicated to the photograph.  Some photo cards accommodate a full bleed photo, which means that your photo prints card edge to card edge.  Other cards will incorporate your photo into the design.  Your photo should be of the highest resolution possible, so make sure to set your camera accordingly. You’ll want to email your photo to us – please include your order number so we can easily match it up. These types of holiday cards work best for a quick solution! Your cards will come ready to mail – just insert the cards into your envelopes and seal shut. You can choose return address printing, labels, or snag a cute return address stamp, too.

Dabney Lee Digital Holiday Photo Cards - Be Merry with Foil

Letterpress-printed Photo Mount Cards. Choosing a letterpress-printed card is a beautiful and luxurious option for your holiday greetings. The design along with your personalized information are letterpress printed on to 100% cotton paper available in different weights (110lb and 220lb).  The end product is a luxurious feeling card that has a debossed look (meaning the ink looks pressed into the paper) typically in 1 or 2 colors (each color requires a separate pass on the printing press thus there being a cost associated with each color added).  When ordering these as photo cards, they are only available as photo mount – you affix the proper size photo to the dedicated area. This option is suitable for those who have a bit more time and enjoy the project!  It makes a memorable statement.

Boatman Geller - Letterpress Holiday Photo Mount Card (Carolyna Christmas)

Holiday Cards with Foil.  Foil is all the rage and adds a real sparkle to your holiday greeting and photo cards! For most designs, you can choose the color of the foil – from traditional gold and silver to other fun foil colors like rose gold, red, hot pink, green, blue, and white.  Foil stamped embellishments/text can be used in conjunction with a digitally printed photo as well as with the traditional photo mount option where you use adhesive strips provided with the holiday cards to affix your photo.

Dabney Lee Holiday Photo Mount Cards - Be Merry Foil

Holiday Greeting Cards. Prefer sending your holiday cards without photos? We have dozens of options with beautiful designs. From whimsical to formal and everything in between!  Our Holiday Greeting cards are offered in a variety of print methods from digital to thermography to foil stamping.  We also carry many Boxed Holiday products which are cards printed with a greeting only inside ready for you to hand write your signature. We have a huge selection of holiday greeting cards ensuring that there is something for everyone’s taste and budget.

Chatsworth Holiday Greeting Cards - Block City

Worth explaining are the differences between flat and folded.  Stating the obvious, a flat card is in fact, flat, and doesn’t open.  Sometimes there are printing options on both sides (back and front.) A folded greeting card opens up with your message on the inside.

Additional options that add style and whimsy to your ensemble are things like envelope linings.  We love to highlight one of the colors in the card design again by choosing a coordinating lining.  Larger address labels – typically round or square in shape – add color and design to the back of your envelope and double as an envelope seal!

Whatever your style is this 2020 holiday season, More Than Paper has a wide variety of options. Check out the current sale with holiday cards from Boatman Geller, Dabney Lee and Chatsworth and take advantage of this incredible discount that doesn’t happen often and likely won’t be seen again in 2020.

Have questions? We pride ourselves on our customer service and attention to detail. We’re happy to speak with our customers to guide them through the process and to develop a card ensemble that is unique and well coordinated.  Contact us at info@morethanpaper.com or by phone at 516-466-1227.

We created a simple place card setting using white card stock, red ink loaded in our PSA Essentials stamper, and a whimsy tree stamp from PSA Whimsy Tree Peel & Stick stamps

To create the place card setting, cut white card stock to 3" x 3" or choose a patterned paper or color card stock (any will do!)  Take your PSA Essentials stamper loaded with red ink and a whimsy tree, and stamp on the paper.  You can use any stamp or even a sticker, we have some cute ones in our Crafter's Corner, check out these great stickers!
